Hear Ye, Hear Ye…. Mt. Pleasant News!

First and foremost of news to share is that  November 13th marked the day that Small Business Revolution announced their top 20 towns for Season 4. If you missed the news, Mt. Pleasant was not in the running this year but hey if they do it again next year we can nominate our town again for a chance in Season 5. I believe there were approximately 12,000 towns nominated so it was quite the task I’m sure for Deluxe/Small Business Revolution to narrow it down to 20.

However, congratulations is in order for the top 20!!  Of the top 20, there was a Tennessee town chosen; Gallatin. YAY!! Way to go Gallatin. So even though we did not make it this year, we can rally around Gallatin as they go through the process and support them in anyway possible. I would love to see their town as the final winner.

Court House Ground Breaking

The City of Mount Pleasant announced that they will break ground on Wednesday, November 14th at 1:00PM for the new County Courthouse, Mt. Pleasant location on the corner of Bluegrass Ave and Olive Street. Come and celebrate this exciting time for Mount Pleasant! It might be chilly out but that doesn’t matter – just bundle up with a coat, scarf and gloves if you can make it.

TJ Smawls on South Main Street was closed for about a month while it got a face lift of sorts. It’s under new ownership and management with Dolores Blankenship. This is her new endeavor; after all she wasn’t busy enough. 🙂 But seriously, she loves our town and not only is one of the Commissioner, but now a local business owner. Go check out the new decor and eat a meal there. I need to get over there myself very soon. All the best to her!

1824 General Store

Who likes to shop? Who likes wine? “I do! I do! “, said the residents of Mt. Pleasant and surrounding communities.

“Glad to hear it”, said 1824 General Store. “Because between now and Christmas, every Thursday and Friday night from 5PM to 7PM, we are having  Sip and Shop in the store”.

“What is Sip and Shop?”, they asked.  1824 General Store responded with excitement, “It’s a time for you to stop in and have a complimentary glass of wine (if you’re over 21 years of age) while doing some holiday shopping in the store. Doesn’t get much better than that.”

The residents of Mt. Pleasant and neighboring communities cheered with joy! 🙂

Shop Small Saturday

Every year there is a national campaign encouraging people to shop small businesses called Shop Small Saturday.  It’s always on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. The Mt. Pleasant merchants would LOVE to have you do some shopping on Saturday, November 24th and support our community and local businesses. We will be open regular business hours from 10am – 7pm but check with your other favorite businesses in town for their hours. Thank you in advance for your support!

Hay Long Hall Presents

Hay Long Hall is a new event venue here in Mt. Pleasant on Hay Long Ave near town square.  It’s an adorable, historic church turned unique venue with pews for seating. The owner, Michelle Morgan  has done an amazing job bringing talent to the venue and bringing life back into an old building. Here are a few of the events you may be interested in attending. Be sure to check out their website for more details and pricing.

Saturday Nov 17th: Secret Commonwealth 7PM-9PM (Celtic Band)

Saturday Nov 24th: A Victorian Christmas Carol Play  12pm-2pm

Saturday Nov 24th: Craig Morris and King Cotton 7PM – 9PM (Bluegrass Band)

Sunday Funday in Mt. Pleasant

Participating merchants will be open various times on Sunday, November 25th. Last year several merchants had ornament decorating free to children to participate in while parents shopped for holiday gifts.

Each merchant will have something different to offer. Please check the merchants social media pages for more information. We at 1824 General Store will be open from noon – 4pm and will have ornaments for the kids to make and take home. Stop on in!

Whew… that’s probably enough for now although there is always something good happening in Mt. Pleasant. Thanks for reading and sharing my blog.

Until next time 🙂 Angela

Last Week’s Blog – ‘Ditto’…….

Last Week’s Blog – ‘Ditto’ for This Week 🙂

Ditto has a couple of meanings. For those of you who grew up in the 70’s, well ditto meant the coolest pants EVER!! They came in all kinds of colors and some had the seam on the butt and legs and others did not. Regardless, they were all COOL.  Loved, loved, loved those pants.

But for today’s ‘Ditto’ meaning for this week’s blog, according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary – ditto means “to repeat the action or statement of”.

Since last week’s blog was about Small Town Business Revolution and asking everyone to nominate Mt. Pleasant – I’m repeating the same blog as last week below. In other words, this week’s blog is ‘ditto’ of last week’s.

Please read the blog below for more information about nominating Mt. Pleasant. The deadline to nominate is Friday, October 26th. You only have today, tomorrow and Friday. So chop, chop…. get on it as soon as it is feasible for you.

Thank you (English),  Grazie (Italian), Gracias (Spanish), תודה (Hebrew), Merci (French),  Efharisto (Greek), Danke (German), Ngiyabonga (Zulu)

Several blogs ago, I mentioned Small Town Business Revolution‘ that provides an opportunity for  small towns undergoing revitalization efforts. Deluxe Inc. has provided marketing and other business services to both large and small companies since 1915.

When they celebrated their 100th Anniversary in 2015, they decided to give $500,000 to a small town in America to help with their revitalization efforts by helping small businesses.  Towns were nominated across the country and narrowed down to a handful. Then the handful chosen were voted on and one town was named the winner.

Amanda Brinkman from Deluxe and Shark Tank’s Robert Herjavec came into the winning town along with a team of people to help businesses and the town with guidance on how to be successful and provide a face-lift where and if needed. The recipients of the town were six small businesses which were given marketing advice and materials, a refresh of their decor if needed, business advice, industry expertise, revamping of displays, and anything that may benefit the city as a whole up to $500,000 value. It’s really quite exciting! Deluxe filmed the revitalization process and people all over the country soon knew about X small town.

It was such a success the first year, Deluxe decided to keep going. They have completed 3 seasons and are now taking nominations for Season 4!! That’s where YOU come in.

MT. PLEASANT NEEDS YOU AND YOU AND YOU……..

Between now and October 26th we need you and your friends and family to go online and nominate Mt. Pleasant to be chosen as one of the finalists for receiving this generous opportunity. If in the end, we win the whole enchilada (which I think we can/will) 6 businesses in Mt. Pleasant  would be chosen to receive marketing and business advice and assistance where needed. (Deluxe chooses the six businesses by the way) It would really be a boost for them and our town. It would help get Mt. Pleasant on the map for people to visit our quaint little town and help the revitalization efforts. We need more people coming to town and shopping and dining for our town to thrive and be even a better place to live and work. (I know you’ve heard me say it a million times and I’ll be saying it a million more I’m sure) 🙂

How do you nominate Mt. Pleasant you ask?? Well, it’s very simple. Just follow these instructions. It may take anywhere between 5-20 minutes depending on how much you write – but OH MY – it could mean the difference between getting a chance to win or not. So PLEASE (yes, I’m begging and encouraging and asking and motivating you) take a few minutes out of your day and nominate our town.  THANK YOU!!!

  1. Go to Deluxe Small Business Revolution Nomination page. (click name or here)
  2. Fill out information about yourself,  City name, State and Population.
  3. In 500 words or less, type how bringing Deluxe’s Small Business Revolution – Main Street to Mt. Pleasant would make a difference.
  4. Hit ‘submit’ and you’re done.
  5. Tell all your friends and family about this opportunity and ask them to nominate Mt. Pleasant also.

Until next time 🙂 Angela

Will Mt. Pleasant, Tenn Be Next?

Several months ago, Kate Collier, the City Manager for Mt. Pleasant had mentioned in an email to a group of us that her friend had told her about something called The Small Business Revolution.

Well, I quickly looked into it to see what it was all about. Deluxe Corporation, is a marketing company that has been around since 1915. In celebration of their 100th anniversary they decided to do something incredible, over the top, unheard of, amazing, giving, thoughtful and just down right kind!! Here’s how they explain it:

The company celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2015, creating the Small Business Revolution as a way to celebrate the small businesses that drive our economy and bring our communities together, and create a movement of support. We created the Small Business Revolution – Main Street to help those small businesses, and in turn, those small towns, reignite the spark that drives them and keeps people coming back.

Each season they look for a small town to help and choose six businesses to participate by gifting $500,000 towards the town’s revitalization efforts. They spend the money where it will be best utilized. It may be setting up an existing business with a new website, business cards, shelving etc.; whatever the need may be to help them become more efficient, organized, seen on the Internet etc. They also look at what the town in general might benefit from.  Once the town is chosen as the winner the town’s transformation is featured in their online series. It’s pretty cool.

Historic Downtown Mt. Pleasant. Tenn

Once I read about that, I reached out to see how to nominate Mt. Pleasant and was told applications for Season 4 would take place in the Fall of 2018. Since learning about this opportunity several months ago- I’ve watched every video series for the 3 seasons on the Small Business Revolution gleaning whatever information, knowledge, expertise I possibly could. I’m not sure exactly ‘how’ the whole process works for nominating a town until they announce the nomination process in the Fall but I do believe it’s something along these lines.

You submit video or print or both about your town and somewhere in the process I believe towns are voted on to be chosen as the winner to be the recipient of this incredible gift. When I get more information on how and when, I’ll be sure to write another blog on it.

Amanda Brinkman and Robert Herjavec

Could you imagine getting $500K for our town and businesses, marketing advice and tools from Amanda Brinkman of Deluxe and business advice from Robert Herjavec from the Shark Tank? Mt. Pleasant could absolutely benefit big time from these two and their team of experts to continue us in the right direction of our revitalization. You can bet when it comes to making sure we have a gazillion votes, letters, videos that not only me but other business owners, City Officials, residents and non-residents will be involved.

After posting one of my blogs on Instagram about Mt. Pleasant’s revitalization efforts, Small Business Revolution started following me on Instagram and suggested we nominate our town. Well , of course we will. 🙂 That was the plan all along from months ago when Kate’s friend mentioned it to Kate who mentioned to some of us. I’m just waiting Amanda on how to nominate our town so once that information becomes available, we’re going to get started on the process. Woot! Woot!

We residents, we business owners, we City officials, we visitors to Mt. Pleasant, we who love Mt. Pleasant, we investors of Mt. Pleasant, we Maury County residents, we kids, we adults….. can all jump on board the

#NOMINATE MT. PLEASANT FOR SMALL BUSINESS REVOLUTION

wagon when the time comes to give our town the best possible chance of winning the whole enchilada. What am I saying? ‘best possible chance’?! We must go into this process believing and knowing that we are the winners of Season 4!!! Now doesn’t that feel a whole lot more exciting and fun than ‘a chance’? Of course it does!! We will do it together and it will be a very fun journey!! Stay tuned.

Thank you Deluxe! Thank you Robert and Amanda for caring about small town America and the businesses that help keep them thriving.

Until next time 🙂 Angela
