Mt. Pleasant’s Annual Community Events

Every year, Mt. Pleasant has four major community events planned by the City, Community Development and oodles of volunteers. It takes a village as the saying goes to make these events a success and it’s so true. Success for the residents and visitors of Mt. Pleasant, success for the business owners, success for the City of Mt. Pleasant. Success in bringing the community together to meet, mingle, make memories with family and just have a really FUN time or as a friend says, a BIG time.

What are the four big events each year in Mt. Pleasant, you ask?

Paint the Town – This  is an art competition. Artists set up their easels all over town and paint something of Mt. Pleasant that inspires them. It’s an all day event. When their time is complete – judges determine which paintings win and in which category. Following the judging, all art is for sale and on display outside of City Hall. It’s a fun event. It’s already happened for 2018 so if you missed it you’ll have to wait until 2019. It took place on May 19th. Thank you all that participated as artists and spectators.

Thunder Over Maury – This is a fun event for families, kids, adults, car enthusiasts, airplane enthusiasts, foodies, and shoppers. It’s happening this Saturday, June 30th from 10am – 8:30pm at the Maury County Airport in Mt. Pleasant. So many people have been working hard to make this a fun event.

There will be a kids zone, vendor booths in the hanger, vintage airplane fly-in,  classic cars, food trucks, music all day, and fireworks at night. The price for admission is only $5 for 13 years+ , $3 for kids 7-12 and kids 6 and under are free. Park across the street from the airport and the trolley will take you to the airport where it’s all happening. Easy peasy….

You can even take the trolley for the small fee of $2 round-trip from the airport to downtown Mt. Pleasant for more shopping/eating options as well as checking out the new art mural as you come into downtown on the left. Don’t forget to take a selfie. Tell everyone you know about this fun event planned for Saturday!! Let’s have an incredible turnout.

Mid-South Barbecue Festival – This event is the longest running annual event for Mt. Pleasant and is well attended by many around the world. Yes, you read that correctly. The Mid-South BBQ Festival is KCBS sanctioned, State Championship BBQ Competition and street fair in Mount Pleasant, TN.  Competitors come to compete from all areas of the country and world.

This year’s BBQ Festival will be held on October 19th and 20th so mark your calendars. Most of the festivities (at least this past year) took place on Saturday. There will  be lots of BBQ to eat, vendors for shopping, 5K run, music and a Halloween costume contest. The festival is becoming more well known each year in this happening little town of ours.

And according to the their Facebook page, ‘Exciting news for the Mid-South Barbecue Festival. Smithfield has chosen our 2018 festival as one of their “Smoking with Smithfield” partners! Thank you Smithfield!!!’ I’m not sure what that means because I don’t know that much about BBQ competitions. Maybe they donate all the pork for the competition???? Whatever it is apparently it’s something good. I do however recognize the name Smithfield for their bacon. 🙂

Maury’s Mayberry Christmas – This is an event filled with Christmas joy and fun. Last year was the first event and as with any event, each year the event takes place it typically gets better and better. This past year there were carolers in the streets, Mayberry characters dressed up, a parade, a visit from Santa, contests and things for the kiddos to do in participating shops including some great sales. This year’s event is scheduled for Saturday, December 1st. Mark your calender’s and join in the Christmas festivities.

All of these major events provide a fun-filled day for residents and visitors alike. The work that is put into each event by the volunteers and workers is well there are no words to describe just how awesome they are‘. They are committed people to our community and we thank you so much for all your effort, time and dedication for the good of our community and its revitalization efforts.

I encourage everyone reading this blog to attend these events that are designed to bring to you the people in the community – a place to gather, to laugh, to eat, to make memories together.

Until next time, Angela 🙂
